So here's the real, plain-English rundown on Washington's window tint laws for 2026, no legal mumbo-jumbo.
First, a quick translation. Tint darkness is measured by VLT, or Visible Light Transmission. The lower the number, the darker the tint. A 50% film lets half the light through; a 5% "limo" tint lets almost none through. Got it? Cool. Now the rules.
WHAT'S LEGAL IN WASHINGTON
For passenger cars (sedans), here's the deal: your front side windows have to let in at least 24% of light (24% VLT or lighter), and the same 24% rule applies to your back side windows and rear window. On the windshield, tint is only allowed on the top 6 inches — that visor strip up top.
For SUVs, trucks, and vans, the front side windows still have to be 24% VLT or lighter, but you get more freedom out back. The rear side windows and back window can go as dark as you want, including blacked-out limo tint.
A few more rules that trip people up. Reflectivity can't be more than 35%, and no mirror-finish or metallic-looking film. No red, amber, or yellow tint anywhere — keep it in the neutral/charcoal family. And if your back window is tinted, you need working dual side mirrors (most vehicles already have these, so no big deal).
MEDICAL EXEMPTIONS
